Until 2007 this military bike was not available outside of the DARPA circle.
But due to an overwhelming demand from hunters, smoke-jumpers, parachutists, and many other guys that enjoy getting off-the-beaten-track, Montague decided to manufacture the original Military Bike in the form of the "Paratrooper™" for police and civilian use.

Quick Releases: No tools are needed to fold and unfold the X-Series™ Bike.
Just open one quick release lever on the top tube and remove the front wheel. Folds in under thirty seconds without tools.
Safety Lock: Recessed drop out for quick release prevents frame from folding even with quick release not tightened.

Montague Corporation is the pioneer of the Folding Integrated Technology (FIT), deemed to be one of the next-generation trends in the bicycle industry.
DARPA, the Pentagon-based agency, known for it's foresight and investment in significant world changing projects (including funding the development of the Internet back in the 70's) recognized the importance of this folding technology for military use and so funded the development of a bicycle that could be used by US Marines, Paratroopers, Military Police and other Military divisions.

AIR DROP GROUND MOBILITY:
The Paratrooper Tactical Mountain Bike was designed as ground mobility for the paratrooper. It is a sturdy, durable full size Mountain Bike, designed to fold so the bike can be dropped on a static line. Once on the ground the bike is unfolded and serves as effective, efficient and stealthy ground transportation, allowing easy evacuation upon completion of a mission.

LAV / RECONNAISSANCE SCOUT:
Using the Paratrooper Tactical Mountain Bike in conjunction with LAR's, allows the company increased mobility and security. The Paratrooper Reconnaissance model folds so you can attach it to the side of vehicle and serves as back-up transportation. The Paratrooper is a stealthy recon/scout vehicle able to travel with little to no thermal or acoustic signatures

ALTERNATIVE TO FOOT SOLDIER:
The Paratrooper Tactical Mountain Bike offers the most efficient form of human powered transportation available. LAW ENFORCEMENT / EMERGENCY:
Bicycles are a proven method of law enforcement and are being used increasingly by agencies throughout the country to patrol areas previously patrolled on foot or on horse. The Paratrooper model folds to fit in the trunk of a police cruiser. The officer can now drive to any location or park and can remove the bicycle from the trunk of the cruiser, unfold and begin patrolling otherwise hard to protect areas.

CLIX STSTEM:
Clever integration of the patented CLIX System allows for the Paratrooper to be folded in under 20 seconds without the use of tools.
A flip of the CLIX quick release lever on the top tube and the bike folds to a compact size.
If you forget to retighten the QR after unfolding, a secondary lock prevents the frame from folding.

FIT SYSTEM:
The Paratrooper frame is designed around a patented folding system.
This design eliminates the need to break the frame in order to fold the bike.
Not only does this make folding easier but it makes this bike the strongest folding bike on the market.

MILITARY HISTORY

Since the 1980s, Montague has provided full-size folding bicycles to various divisions of the military.

In 1997, under a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Montague partnered with the US Marines to develop the Tactical Electric No Signature (TENS) Mountain Bike. For this project, Montague developed a new folding frame design called the X-Series™, integrating the F.I.T.™ system into the frame design. The non-electric version of the TENS Mountain Bike, named The Paratrooper®, became available shortly thereafter.

The F.I.T.™(Folding Integrated Technology) system was developed to allow a full-size, high-performance mountain bike to fold in half so that it could fit through the cargo door of a military aircraft with an airborne ranger. When the soldier would hit the ground, he or she would have a tactical mountain bike to use as transportation, thereby bridging the gap between walking and deploying heavy military vehicles. This would not only aid in transportation but it would help to facilitate battlefield reporting as well.

The Paratrooper® is a full-size mountain bike that can traverse terrain silently at high speeds with no thermal or acoustic radar signature - key components when trying to avoid the enemy. The Paratrooper® offers up to 500 pounds of load hauling capability and it does not need gasoline. It has enhanced off-body load bearing capabilities, a high level of maneuverability, and can compact to a portable size in less than 30 seconds. The bikes are indeed used in conjunction with LAV’s (Light Armored Vehicles) and HMMWV’s as back up transportation and they also help to facilitate battlefield reporting.

It became clear that the folding technology found on bikes developed for the U.S. Military could be used in the civilian world as well, as these bikes began turning up in car trunks, closets, and a host of other places where conventional non-folding bikes could not fit. By popular demand the military bikes made their way into civilian use.
